May 10--Armored tanks no longer roam the hills of eastern Yuba County.
German prisoners of war who once lived in cell blocks have long since gone home. And the engines of the fastest jet in the world, the SR-71 -- which traveled more than 2,000 mph -- are now silent.
They are part of the past, but their presence at Beale Air Force Base, and its predecessor, Camp Beale, are part of Yuba County and U.S. military history. The base continues to help shape the world and make history as the war on terror continues to be fought around the world.
