FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. _ That a 23-year-old woman was the fastest _ by far _ in this week's rookie orientation for the May 29 Indianapolis 500 may astonish some people. But it doesn't surprise me a bit that Danica Patrick has, as my wife says, "given a whole new meaning to `You go, girl.''
In 1997, with the 500 dropping in international esteem because of the split with CART, I sat in Lyn St. James' garage in Gasoline Alley and mused to her: "You know, you're the only driver in the field who could win this race and make it a banner headline again, all over the world."
