Our House of Representatives, facing a record budget deficit, passed a transportation bill with 4,000 earmarks worth $12 billion. It included $200 million for a bridge in Alaska to serve an island with 50 residents. It budgeted $500,000 for a transportation museum in Chicago, $300,000 for Yonkers, NY, to buy a trolley and $200,000 for a bike path in Petal, Mississippi, according to Citizens Against Government Waste, a Washington-based budget watchdog. Those pork handouts are great for the recipients but are a little extravagant for the size of the federal debt, particularly when the Administration is pledging to reduce deficit spending.
