Article: Lay Buddhist Group Aids Japanese Earthquake Victims.

Following the severe earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale in the Niigata region of Japan on October 23 which killed 34 people, injured over 2,000 and destroyed over 6,000 homes, the Soka Gakkai lay Buddhist association has pooled its resources to offer emergency aid and shelter to some of the estimated 100,000 people unable to return to their homes.

Starting from October 24, the Nagano branch of Soka Gakkai delivered a total of forty tons of basic necessities-including food, potable water, blankets and clothing-to the most seriously affected towns of Tokamachi, Nagaoka and Ojiya.
