May 16--The region's dairy farmers, coming off a year of relatively decent milk prices, have a few reasons to be optimistic, courtesy of new state legislation.
Though rising energy and land prices are limiting farmers' profitability and growth in Washington County now, changes in the state's Empire Zone incentive program could bode well for dairy farmers in the future.
"We were really excited to see it happen when the budget passed last month," said Peter Gregg, a spokesman for the New York State Farm Bureau, referring to the portion of the budget that extends Empire Zone benefit eligibility to agriculture co-ops.
