Thirty men and women sit silently at dusk inside the Kannon Do Zen Meditation Center in Mountain View, Calif. They are motionless, facing the blank walls. Eyes are half-closed, backs are straight, legs are folded. The silence grows for 40 minutes as the light fades. There is an occasional sigh. Sounds drift in through an open door: a train whistle blows, a breeze rustles the leaves, a child sings ``Take Me Out to the Ball Game.''
