When I was born in 1936, the entire country was cutting back.

I guess my parents didn't get the message.

I entered the world during The Great Depression, an economic slump that began in 1929 and lasted until about 1939.

Characterized by decreasing business activity, falling prices and unemployment, the depression period certainly wasn't a time for adding anything, however small.

If you wanted to cut something in the 1930s, people would listen.

That didn't stop Carl Megel - or my parents.
