As the horizontal directional drilling industry matures, contractors are accomplishing projects that are longer, larger in diameter, and increasingly complex. Many projects accomplished today by mid-size rigs (50,000 pounds to 100,000 pounds of pullback capacity) would have been completed by maxi-HDD rigs (more than 100,000 pounds in pullback capacity) just a few years ago. Projects that would have required mid-size rigs just a few years ago are being completed with mini-directional drilling rigs (under 50,000 pounds pullback capacity).
