Introduction
Residents of rural America have historically derived part or all of their livelihoods from natural resources, such as the forests, and continue to do so in many parts of the country. However, over time, given changes in technology, consumption patterns, and regulation, natural resources form an increasingly smaller share of widespread rural income than in the past. In some communities, the lack of alternatives has led to growing poverty and economic insecurity.
