BOULDER, Colo. _ My 15-year-old daughter recently had a dream. She is about to leave Boulder to study at the San Francisco School of Ballet _ a prospect that has her both excited and fearful. In her dream, she was in a dormitory building when she felt a rumbling beneath her feet. The room shook. To her terror, the entire edifice began to topple. She felt herself falling.
But there was no crash. The building drifted to the ground as gently as a petal.
I don't know how my daughter interpreted this dream, but the imagery delighted me. Her world was about to crack, heave and resettle like that building, yet she had created a safe, tranquil outcome.
