Toward the end of April 2005, the Ukraine and the European Union (EU) presented their action plan for 2005. The plan focuses on further integration of the Ukraine into the EU, gaining recognition for the Ukraine as a functioning market economy, and achieving World Trade Organization (WTO) membership for the country.
News of the presentation was carried by Itar-Tass (successor to the well-known Soviet news agency Tass) reporting from Kiev on April 26, 2005.
Itar-Tass quoted the Deputy Prime Minister as saying that market economy status was likely to be granted by June. The Deputy Prime Minister is the Ukrainian official in charge of European integration.
