Q. A catalog I received touts the value of worm castings for improvement of the soil. A small bag of them seemed pretty expensive and I wonder if it is worth the cost.
A. We have also seen the ads but we can not guarantee all the claims they make.
It is true that earthworms are important in conditioning the soil and adding nutrients plants need. Earthworms aerate the soil and help in water-retention. The castings are a naturally produced material and it can be added to the garden, lawn or even potting mixes without fear of harming the plants.
