Finding South Eugene High School on Newsweek magazine's list of the nation's top 1,000 high schools evokes contradictory reactions: A) This list doesn't mean much. B) Why aren't more Lane County and Oregon schools on it?
Newsweek's rankings are a blunt instrument. The magazine counts the number of students taking Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate tests. That number is divided by the number of graduating seniors. The school with the highest ratio is No. 1 - Jefferson County International Baccalaureate School in Irondale, Ala., with 10.755 tests per graduating senior. South was No. 531, with a ratio of 1.529.
