Article: Biomarkers show promise in gauging prostate ca severity.(Urology)

ORLANDO, FLA. -- Several biomarkers that may help to distinguish aggressive forms of prostate cancer from less worrisome types could guide physicians in planning treatment, speakers reported at a symposium on prostate cancer sponsored by the American Society for Clinical Oncology.

These biomarkers are needed because widespread prostate specific antigen (PSA) testing has led to detection of numerous low-grade, mild prostate cancers in men with relatively low PSA levels (below 10 ng/mL). Many of these men receive aggressive therapy, even though the natural history of their disease indicates that active monitoring for disease progression might suffice.
