BELLEVUE -- Newport, welcome to the party.
The Knights accepted an invitation to the major contenders' race in the KingCo 3A on Tuesday night after an impressive 55-43 throttling of Mercer Island.
Newport (10-6, 9-4) moved into a tie for third place with Bellevue, which lost to undefeated Issaquah on Tuesday, with a week remaining in the regular season.
"I think the top four teams are as tough as I've seen them," said Newport coach Dave Olzendam, in his third year.
