FORT KNOX -- For more than six decades, Fort Knox has been known for its heavy metals -- gold and armor.
The sprawling military post in the heart of Kentucky has been home to the U.S. Army's Armory Center, which currently employs nearly 4,000 military and civilian workers, since 1940. The bulk of the country's gold reserves were moved here in the late 1930s.
The gold is staying, but under the Pentagon's proposal to reorganize the country's military installations, the armor -- and thousands of armor warfare trainees -- would have to go.
