NIGEL MELVILLE has paid the price for Gloucester's poor season.

The 44-year-old manager left Kingsholm after what is understood to have been a disagreement with Gloucester owner Tom Walkinshaw over a reduced budget for next season.

The club refused to say whether Melville resigned, as opposed to being sacked, only that they had 'parted company with immediate effect'.

His exit followed a long barren stretch which culminated in the club's failure to qualify for Europe next season.
