PETROL guzzling school-run "Chelsea tractors" have contributed to a huge rise in vehicle greenhouse gas emissions, official figures reveal today.
Since 1990, emissions from transport have soared by almost 50 per cent, largely because of increased car use.
In 2003 the transport and communications industries were responsible for 95.7 million tonnes of carbon dioxide spewing into the atmosphere.
This compares with 64.6 million tonnes in 1990.
The huge rise means that emissions from greater car use and congestion could soon overtake those from manufacturing industry in Britain.
