Today, American outboard motor manufacturers number only a few. But during the 1950s, the scene was populated by more than a dozen firms whose motors combined to lend color and variety to the nation's waterways. Added to these was yet a second wave of private-brand engines, built by those companies, but wearing logos of the retailers, be they mail-order or auto tire company. Somehow, the waterfront seemed a more diversified and interesting place.
