The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is assisting the Philippines with a $500,000 to $800,000 expansion of a local mango irradiation facility into a semi-commercial status in an aim to accommodate more mangoes being tested for the US market.
Alumanda M. dela Rosa, Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) director, said the IAEA, a United Nations agency promoting the peaceful and safe application of radiation, is extending much of the financing for the expansion which should also ensure safe operation of the irradiation facility.
