May 19--TOKYO -- The Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry has set the ambitious goal of doubling exports of the nation's agricultural produce in five years. The government needs to pursue a stable policy to ensure the growth of the nation's farm industry.

Late last month, Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi attended a meeting of a government-backed agricultural group promoting the export of farm products.

"I heard that Japanese apples produced in Aomori Prefecture are sold at N2,000 each in Beijing. I was surprised," he said.
