My first impression of Singapore came, as it does for many Americans, on the heels of a long flight.
Groggy and grumpy, I braced myself for the hassles I'd encountered in some other Asian cities: a crowded, unkempt airport, aggressive taxi drivers, chaotic traffic, dirty streets, undrinkable water and questionable food.
What an awakening from jet lag I had that day.
Spotless cabs waited in an orderly queue outside the airy, modern airport. As I rode down well-engineered and well-monitored roadways I passed stylishly dressed locals, manicured gardens and gleaming skyscrapers. Not a ...
