Last time anyone around Norfolk saw Denise Dowse she was giving Ray Charles his first job.

Of course, that was in the 2004 movie "Ray," which earned an Oscar for Jamie Foxx starring as Ray Charles. Dowse, a Norfolk State University graduate, played bar manager Marlene.

On Sunday, you can see Dowse in person as she returns to Norfolk to perform in "Hiram & Nettie," a musical drama about two slaves in 1822 Savannah, Ga. Dowse plays Nettie's mother, Momma Sue.
