If his outing Sunday afternoon is any indication, the Darren Oliver experiment may prove to be short-lived.
The 34-year-old left-handed pitcher started for the Cubs' Class AAA affiliate Sunday afternoon and allowed 9 runs on 9 hits in 2 1/3 innings in a 10-2 loss that the Iowa Cubs' own Web site deemed a "Mother's Day Massacre."
Though they signed Oliver on Friday, the Cubs didn't see fit to announce it until general manager Jim Hendry spoke with reporters Sunday morning.
"He's done his share of winning in the majors," Hendry said. "He had a good spring training and then Colorado let him go."
