It was decades before a Minnesota missionary family discovered why Gen. Douglas MacArthur sent a submarine to rescue them from the Japanese-controlled Philippines during the spring of 1944.
Turns out, the evacuation was just a cover-up. The primary goal was not to save the family and other Americans trapped during World War II. Instead, the sub was dispatched to pick up top-secret Japanese battle plans that had floated from a downed plane.
