JANGHOWON, South Korea, May 25 (Yonhap) -- For many, a military prison has long been regarded as a place where serious human rights violations consistently occur, as seen in the Abu Ghraib prison incident in Iraq.
The South Korean military, however, is taking steps to resolve inhumane conditions in its detention facility, which has been marred by a long history of physical abuse, inferior and unsanitary conditions and frequent prison riots.On Wednesday, the military opened its sole prison, in a small farming village in Janghowon, about 80 kilometers south of Seoul, to the media for the first time since its foundation in 1949.
