Report: MTBE cleanup could cost $3B

An environmental group will release a report that concludes nationwide remediation of leaking underground fuel tanks could cost between $1 billion and $3 billion, though the public cost would be much lower.

The Association for Environmental Health and Sciences studied sites where the fuel oxygenate methyl tertiary-butyl ether, or MTBE, is present. The Westford, Mass., group looked at U.S. Environmental Protection Agency data, evaluated the history of cleanup costs and incorporated forecasts for future cleanup methods to produce its study.
