Growing European Union concerns about the safety of Australian tea tree oil's medicinal uses have prompted emergency talks in Canberra about future prospects for the local industry. A spokesman for the EU's Scientific Committee on Consumer Products stated that "the components of tea tree oil are not regulated when used in products sold in Europe and there are questions regarding the oil's stability in cosmetic formulations. The safe use of tea tree oil as a cosmetic ingredient cannot be assessed because the industry has not developed an analytical testing method, especially in relation to skin and eye irritation."
