With gas producers in Alberta hopeful that the provincial government may permit up to 16 coalbed methane wells per square mile, ranchers in the province are suddenly taking notice, fully aware of water-related problems experienced by their counterparts in the US Rocky Mountain area, where coalbed methane extraction has been a fact of life for the past 15 years.
In Alberta, as well as most of the US West, ranchers do not own the mineral rights under their properties, meaning the government can sell whatever oil, gas and coal lies beneath to oil and gas companies.
