Dino Grandi, the principal historical figure in Claudia Baldoli's useful study, served as Mussolini's ambassador to Great Britain from 1932 to 1939. Trained as a lawyer, he had fought in World War I and had helped to found the Fascist party. He swiftly had risen in its ranks. During the three years prior to his appointment as ambassador, he had held the foreign ministry portfolio in the Italian government. For a figure of his stature to be assigned to the London embassy reflected the vital importance that this post had in Mussolini's thinking.
