Man's very best friend is the Labrador retriever, according to the American Kennel Club's 2004 registration survey. It marked the fifteenth year that the Lab won top spot as America's favorite and most widely owned dog. There were nearly three times more Labs registered with the AKC (146,692 total) in 2004 than any other breed. Golden retrievers (second place) and beagles (fourth place) were two other hunting breeds that landed top-five spots.
