Paris Orly's location on the southern outskirts of the capital offered Air France passengers a quick transfer to the city's centre when it opened in the 1950s. However, the traffic expansion of the 1960s and early 1970s soon meant that its facilities were unable to support its forecast growth and 1974 brought Paris a brand-new international gateway, Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG).
