In the job market, a college degree is worth almost double the value of a high school diploma, new Census Bureau figures show.
In 2004, bachelor's degree-holders earned an average $51,206 a year, compared with $27,915 a year for those with a high school diploma only, according to the Census numbers.
Without a high school degree, earnings dropped sharply, to an average $18,734. At the other end of the spectrum, advanced degrees brought an average salary of $74,602.
The Census Bureau also reported record high numbers of people 25 or older both having finished high school, at 85 percent, and earning bachelor's degrees, at 28 percent.
