For centuries, scholars have pored through documents to determine the truth about William Shakespeare and his life in the English town of Stratford-upon-Avon. Key to their search for indisputable facts are the local parish registers--the records of the Church of England's district offices. Regulations issued in 1598 required that entries that had been made on paper should now be copied on parchment, which is much more durable.
