The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) turned out to be more successful than anyone would have imagined. It provided millions of young men with hope and confidence, food and clothing--while enhancing and preserving the environment.

But even at the height of its popularity in 1936, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) knew that this particular New Deal program was too expensive to continue indefinitely.
