AN IRREPLACEABLE tapestry displayed in Chester Cathedral has been stolen from under the noses of staff and tourists. The Chester Mystery Play Quilt, which depicts scenes from the city's world-renowned 14th-century dramas, vanished as hundreds of visitors toured the historic building.
Standing 6ft high, the tapestry was taken from the specially-lit alcove where it was displayed.
The thief is believed to have simply folded the pounds 13,000 artwork into a bin bag and walked out through the visitor centre.
The audacious crime has shocked vergers, who believe it was stolen to order.
