Getting the College of Financial Planning off the ground took dumb luck, guts, and a lot
of ignorance, according to its first president, Jim Johnston. Loren Dunton, who founded the financial planning movement in 1969, envisioned a holding company that would own a publishing company, a consulting firm, a college, and a trade association.
"Those of us who were interested exclusively in the college felt that was an irregular mix, so we took the position from the outset that the college should be separate and independent," says Lew Kearns, who was the college's first chairman of the board.
