This remarkable work is based on an impressive sixty-six eyewitness accounts which the author has drawn together for the first time. Although all the accounts have been published, mostly in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, few of them have been the subject of any detailed, modern research. Most of them were written by German speakers, and only one of them (by Colonel Robert Monro, published in 1637) appears to have been intended for immediate publication.
