After failing at a number of businesses, Lyman Frank Baum found lasting fame in literature.
For 28 years, Baum, the creator of Dorothy, the wizard, the good witch and the Utopian land of Oz, unsuccessfully tried everything from chicken breeding and selling notions to barrel-making and acting.
Baum was born May 15, 1856, in Madison County.
Historical records indicate the Baum family lived on Falls Road, just south of Chittenango. Baum's father, Benjamin Ward Baum, owned part of a barrel-making business there.
