Eight-year-old Jared Saya nearly died two years ago as he waited for a bone marrow transplant to treat blood cancer.
His parents were told it could take months to find a donor whose cells matched Jared's.
"He didn't have time to wait for months," said Geralyn Saya, of Eastwood, the boy's mother. "He was skin and bones."
So Jared's doctor pursued a lesser-known alternative - a transplant using cells from umbilical cord blood. The transplant went well, and the child is now healthy.
"My son is here today because the doctor found a perfect match in five days," Saya said.
