While journalists portray Madonna and Frida Kahlo as sisters in exoticism, the author regards them as engaged critics of female stereotypes.
In May 1990, Barneys, an upscale clothing store on Seventh Avenue in New York City, mounted a window display that featured a mannequin caricature of Madonna.
