Jun. 3--Portland Public Schools has given layoff notices to 70 special education aides, the first of several rounds of layoffs expected this month as the district shrinks its work force to balance its budget next school year.
District officials said layoffs will also hit teachers, administrators, secretaries, food service workers and other education aides, but the numbers in each category aren't certain yet.
