Jun. 4--Its ranks deeply and angrily divided, organized labor's July gathering in Chicago appears likely to mark the departure of its largest union and the start of a drive to set up a competing organization to the 50-year-old labor federation.
"If nothing changes, we will leave the AFL-CIO," said Andy Stern, president of the 1.8 million-member Service Employees International Union and leader of an insurgency that has the backing of at least four other unions.
