A major problem in feminist criticism, concerned as it is with restrictive social roles, is that its emphasis is strongly negative. This negativism, as a critic recently pointed out in a review of Marilyn French's Beyond Power, has the unfortunate effect of lumping womankind together as an oppressed species, while the exceptional woman--the hero--is ignored.
