In 1947 Herbert Faulkner West, librarian and well-known collector of books, wrote in his work, The Mind on the Wing, "California doesn't seem to be good for his (Miller) art, but even if from now on he writes trash, which is unlikely, he will still be quite a light in the literary firmament. I hope he may be saved from his friends, but only time will tell."
