Labor Day could take on new meaning next year - it will probably become the official last day of summer vacation.
As legislators wring their hands over taxes, school budgets and legislative inertia, a proposal prohibiting schools from starting before Labor Day has been quietly making big progress toward becoming law.
Schools currently can't start before Sept. 1, except when construction timelines allow them exemptions. When the shifting Labor Day holiday comes late, as it did last year, and will this year, that can create a hodgepodge of school starting dates.
