Rep. Les Aspin (D-Wis.), virtually assured of taking over the Pentagon's reins later this month, said the Clinton administration is likely to bring home more U.S. troops stationed in Europe than its predecessor but at a slower pace.
In nearly six hours of public testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee last week, Aspin reaffirmed that the incoming Administration will attempt to leave between 75,000 and 100,000 troops in Europe, about half as many as wanted by President Bush.
"But we don't have to do it as rapidly as the Bush Administration did in the past two years," Aspin said.
