Jun. 6--In Internet terms, 1997 was near the dawn of time. Local information was rare, and finding it wasn't easy -- Google's founders were still in grad school, building a computer in a dorm room.

Into this digital dark age came a Web site called the Western New York Regional Information Network, or RIN for short. The RIN offered a well-stocked directory of area schools, parks, government offices and other local information.

Researchers quickly bookmarked it, along with journalists and other residents hungry for data about Western New York.

Now, eight years later, the heavily-traveled site has been taken down ...
