A year after Massachusetts legalized gay marriage, conservative groups said marriage still "faces grave threats," while gay marriage advocates say their progress has been slow but steady.
Gay couples in Massachusetts began receiving civil marriage licenses May 17, 2004, after the state's Supreme Court ruled in 2003 .that it was unconstitutional to allow civil marriage only for heterosexuals. To date, 6,000 gay couples have married.
A Gallup/CNN/USA Today poll showed that 56 percent of Americans oppose gay marriage, down from a high of 68 percent in March, and 39 percent supported gay marriage.
