In several European countries special on-track machines are used for rehabilitation of the track subgrade. The formation protective layers, which have to meet very stringent specifications, are installed without removing the track. The machines are particularly costefficient in operation, as they offer a high output, minimize train operation hindrances and recycle part of the fouled ballast.
Rainer Wenty, Plasser & Theurer, and Helmut Schreiner, Swietelsky International, presented a paper on the machines at the Transportation Research Board meeting in Washington, D.C., this past January.
